Result Hypoxaemia occurred in 57 of 624 (9.1%) with non-invasive ventilation versus 118 of 637 (18.5%) with an oxygen mask.

Among critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, preoxygenation with noninvasive ventilation resulted in a lower incidence of hypoxemia during intubation than preoxygenation with an oxygen mask.

How it has aged

A halving of a dangerous, common event with equipment already at the bedside. Together with DEVICE and PreVent it has rebuilt the ICU intubation checklist around the minutes before the laryngoscope is picked up.
